Karri Cup - Sarah McLachlan Having been run for 32 years now, it was truly an honour to take home the win for fastest female overall - but that was not the highlight for me, just a lovely side effect of having an absolute blast deep in the trees. For the first State XCM round this year, the wicked terrain (steep cheeky climbs), trail diversity (tight single track, bridges & vineyards) & absolutely beautiful splendour of the Karri forest, was just unparalleled. It is truly a privilege to ride so many kilometres, without doubling or looping back across any tracks, and really being buried in brilliant Karri Forrest. Having raced this event as one of my first MTB races ever back in 2016, I was reminded why I fell head over heels in love with MTBing; Fabulous green views, FAST paced fun, & filled with relentless banter. Being surrounded by a variety of riders all day, so chatty and positive, it was a real joy despite the increasing rain, mud & chilly weather. There is a distance for everyone from 100km, 50km, 25km, an 18km enticer, as well as a kids race on the Sunday. You can compete solo, or as team of 2 or 4. It's a unique event as there are 4 timed 25km stages and you clock in and out of each stage so your time at each zone is not calculated towards your overall time. Although not a very technical course, 100km is a long way on a mountain bike and I knew it was going to be tough day out. The course is spectacular as you ride amongst the towering karri forests, with each twist and turn revealing breathtaking scenery, making the challenge as rewarding visually as it is mentally and physically. I was very happy to come away with the win in Super Masters and 3rd female overall! Well Done to all the ladies that took part and finished, a massive achievement! And every year, fuelled by peer pressure, blind optimism, and way too much enthusiasm, I somehow convince myself it’s a good idea. My entire mountain biking career consists of exactly one ride per year—for this event. Hardly a recipe for success, but it’s a familiar recipe Long story short—I finished. It was tough, really, really tough. I spent the day well out of my comfort zone, my confidence abandoned in some places, and I found myself inveting new swear words along the way. I bargained with myself just to keep pedalling and reach the finish line. Was it my best time? Not even close. As it is not a technical ride, it appeals to a mass audience - from those racing for sheep stations or training for SeVen, to those like me who are just out to enjoy the day with good friends. Don't get me wrong, the race has its challenges as 100km on a MTB is never an easy thing, but at least you are slowly dying surrounded by good people and lovely scenery! And that is the heart of the Karri Cup - it has a great chilled vibe, great camaraderie, and you are immersed in some of the most beautiful forest the south has to offer. As it is run over the ANZAC day weekend every year, many riders make a full weekend out of it and camp on the oval (where the start and finish line is) with friends and family, taking advantage of Northcliffe's wonderful hospitality (the event is actually run by the community). Distances include an 8km, 25km, 50 km and 100km race, as well as a run the day before - so there is something for everyone. As a rider, my fitness has dropped off quite a lot over the last couple of years (fat and happy, and by the end my legs knew it!) but I still love getting out and competing in many of these XC races, particularly the Karri Cup, as it is just plain old fun! I no longer get stressed in the lead up to the event or worry about how I will perform, but instead enjoy too much vino and food at the Northcliffe pub (their fish burgers are surprisingly good) and ride with a smile the whole time. An early arrival at the start, with great camaraderie among the W50+, and the many husband-soigneurs. With the run of sunny days, the course ran drier and faster than it had during recon. I got away to a great start, although as I rolled off the line the front tyre felt soft - later discovered it was down to 21psi. I was caught in the shambles at the first turn, a fought through a tight & technical first 5km that took its share of casualties. More fighting to stay in the second bunch, only to lose touch as we hit the first set of climbs (Belgium isn’t flat). I settled into a brisk moving group, which ebbed & flowed for most of the race. Throwing everything at the climbs, sending the descents where the traffic allowed, loving the party crowds & shout-outs on course. I attacked the cobbles (maybe that soft front tyre wasn’t all bad news) & the bike held up well - carnage all around me. I upped the effort in the last 10km to finish up fastest Australian W50+, 16th in W55-59. It's been great to see the strength-skill-size of the women's bunch grow over the past three years. Women ripping the legs off men. Even men who were team mates.” Mo. Tour of Margaret River 2023 was another successful year for 4Five+. Both 4Five+ teams described themselves as “social”, but something strange happens when racers pin on a number…the 4F Femmes bringing home the silverware in Women’s B Division, and 4F Hot Mess collecting a bag of best in age group results. Even bigger success was the camaraderie and consideration shown by the riders for their teamies, and this started well before race weekend. Busy life schedules meant it was impossible to come together and train as a group, but there was trust that riders would do the training required, and 4F would be there to offer the logistical support when it was needed. It takes a team to put teams in the race. Claire drops her chain, I had been wondering where she was ... we hit the base of Brockman and she rides back on, phew, says I've been chasing the last 10km ... l need a rest ... then the sea of pink (Trench G6) rides away up the Brock and Claire bridges over and joins them, and that is the last we see of Claire for this day. Nikki and I find ourselves with SPR, pulling turns, making the most of their downhill pulls, we hit the important descent and Nikki encourages by calling out, "stay with them Vic", another strava PB sees us turning left with the group until Nikki says "I'm feeling good, I'm going to roll with it, are you coming?" Of course! But I can't give more than I have ... and I've a mouthful of food .. with puffing and team work, we held them off and hit the base of Kandalee climb with some advantage, but we can hear SPR behind us, hurting exactly the same. Huge day out, and very proud of our riding. Claire's efforts on the Queen Stage got her a well-earned podium 2nd! AND a 40sec time bonus for the Team. So lucky heading into time trial day. Taking on the world: Kona You need to do a qualifying race in order to be on the start line and I went to Cairns for the qualifying race, which was four months before Kona. Unfortunately, I came back from Cairns with an injured shoulder, which, believe it or not, prevented me from riding my bike comfortably as I couldn’t rest my hands on the handlebars and I certainly couldn’t get onto the aerobars. This meant that my prep for my first ever world championships was going to be sub-optimal. I tried to make it work, but as the weeks got closer, I had to accept that things were the way they were, and I had to work with what I had to get through. We got to the turnaround point and that was the best part of the race! I had seen the state of the road surface and it was sh!t, so I secured all my things and off I went. Downhill with the wind behind me was fun! I reckon I overtook 200 people who were nervously on the brakes, sh!tting themselves with the windy descent. This again was quite hard on my shoulder as I had to press down on the aerobars quite firmly due to the crosswinds and didn’t want to come up and lose momentum. They make you run through town first so everyone can see what an amazing cyclist you are, then it’s out into the lava fields. Poor planners do this part of the run in the heat of the day but if you time things right, you will get out there as the sun goes down, which helps with the heat that is relentlessly reflecting back at you from all the bare, shiny, black rocks. Quite a few people choose this option and given there are no street lights, you need a headlamp as it is pitch dark out there, so what you see is little lights bobbing along, with far off music from the turnaround point. I was having so much *fun* by this point, I just wanted to make it go on and on and on and on…. My goal was to complete the course within the 10 hours and I knew that would be hard for me. Although I had been training more and graduated to riding my gravel bike, the last 2 months before the event did not go as planned and I started the day feeling very apprehensive about my chances of completing the course. It rained and everything changed from the lovely dusty gravel rides that I had done 2 months previously. I rode at the back of the field and the downhills were slippery slopes which challenged me to my limits. As I rode, I kept thinking that I was an idiot to think that I could ever do this, it was too hard, I was completely out of my depth. I made it to Lewana without any mishaps and felt very pleased at that stage to have stayed upright so far. On the approach to Ellis Creek road there was a downpour and I had to dismount for the first time to cross one very muddy section. I had done Ellis Creek on a training ride so I knew I could do it. But the mud was certainly slowing me down and somewhere in the Glacier Valley section I ran out of legs and had to briefly get off and walk. But my shoes were jammed in the cleats with mud so I just toppled over on my side. This happened a couple of times but somehow I was not injured and I knew by now that I would make it within the 10 hour cutoff time. I was thinking how happy I would be to finish and how I could tick this off my to do list and never have to go through such an ordeal again. The last 10km were glorious. I felt like a hero as I crossed the line. It was the hardest thing I have ever done. But instead I chose to do FIVE this year, and it was so liberating to make that decision. Gone was the pressure I usually put on myself, the expectation, the knowing I was underdone in my training and also knowing that I just couldn't muster the required amount of courage, grit and time in the hurt locker that would be required to go the full distance of SEVEN. That is why this event is so good, you have choices about your participation and whether you do the community ride, 3 5 or 7 it all feels like an accomplishment. Five was still a significant challenge, but one that I was able to actually enjoy, with the unintended outcome of actually doing pretty well. 6th female overall for FIVE. It still took me to the limit of my training, but without having to dip into the very costly Grit bank, where I had little reserve. I just didn't have it this time. In 2022 I had qualified for the UCI World Championships at SEVEN, and went to Italy to compete, coming home with a rainbow jersey. That whole campaign had been gruelling, the training, the travel and logistics, the event and getting caught up in a crash early in the race. I knew that my age group had diminished to a point where I just had to finish the remaining 115kms with an elbow that later required 16 stitches and plastic surgery. I wore that well earnt rainbow jersey out on the FIVE course this year, not to show it or me off, rather to show others that anything is possible and often it's a matter (in life and on a bike) of just keeping going. I rode happily, I chatted, I walked a couple of times, had an off in the mud into barbed wire, where a fellow rider stopped, helped me out of the barbed wire, and we both laughed about how "elegant" the fall was. At the top of Brockman, my much needed prescription glasses were covered in mud, forcing me to stop at the aid station where a volunteer carefully cleaned them on his own shirt, gently wiped my face and put my glasses back on. I was so grateful, a tear rolled from my eye, the one I could actually now see out of. By doing Five I actually got to be in front of the elite SEVEN field. It was such a thrill as they called and passed with speedy care, twice actually speaking to me, with one of the men in the front group actually saying, "Looking Strong there Mate" My day was complete. This was my blue buckle ride, and I was hoping to podium so I could qualify for the UCI World Championships. The Female 55+ was a tough age group, including WA doyenne Alison Dyson, and climbing specialist Deb Latouf travelling across from Queensland. It had been a thorough training campaign, but as the race drew nearer it was evident something was off, and taper didn’t bring the usual freshness. Putting it down to more perimenopause hormonal shenanigans, I crossed my fingers and hoped for the best on race day. And then the rain. And the mud. The first hour was OK, with a PR to the top of Brockman, taking on the first big muddy descent like a cowgirl (with appropriate yeehahs). I thought maybe it will be OK. But the next big climb clearly showed that what was a marginal gear selection for a dry course (42-44, set up for Italian flat) was not going to cut it. I then proceeded to grind up every climb, surviving on sheer grit and determination. The only blessings were my CX experience and local knowledge which stood me in good stead for the muddy descents. Ellis Creek climb was torture. By then I had shooting pains through my neck, and had to back off the pace to survive. The bike sounded awful, but I was used to that from CX (maybe not for 6+ hours!). By 100km I was feeling slightly better, but Meachem fixed that. And then the last climb - a muddy, slippery, steep version of hell. I walked for the first time. I felt so demoralized. I finished, and I qualified, but I reached so far into my bucket of grit that I was left entirely empty. So now I recuperate and gather up my learnings - Italy awaits! The toughest of slogs - so far. A soggy, tracked out course with drivetrain killing mud upped the challenge dramatically. And enough climbing to rival a Tour de France mountain stage. And did I mention the mud? What Brendon Morrison, Rebecca Cotton and that tribe of loyal volunteers stage is something you won't fail to get something out of it. Most of us are there for a personal target rather than a "result" - but then we're also mates with Deb Kempe, Vanessa Johnson and all the other 4F+ hitters that resulted. I didn't get less out of it than them, and I can only be chuffed to be a small part of this community. Just do SEVEN. That is all. Psychologist Pippa Bell led a discussion about the nature of resilience, and ways we can foster this by focusing on social connections, wellness, healthy thinking, and what gives our life meaning. Line a slice tray or square lasagne dish with baking paper. •Put condensed milk & peanut butter in a saucepan and warm through, stirring to combine. •Take off the heat, and add remaining ingredients. For something different, ATTA’s Panther Trophy is an interesting blend of off-road (MTB/gravel) and time trialling. The last round of WA Cyclocross Numbat Cup is coming up, and there are 45+ femmes occupying the upper reaches of the Elite leaderboard. With a combined age of 114 years, they averaged 37.2 kph, dodged a male duo "off" on a hotdog corner in front of them, and finished fourth in their Category (Female Duo). Beginning as a desire to have matching kit, what soon developed was the realisation that the need to stay Fit and Fast, whilst having Fun and being supported was a real need for female athletes through midlife and beyond. We are active in the WA cycling community. We engage with stakeholders to promote women’s participation, and hold our own female-focused events such as the Twilight Criterium Series (in its 4th edition in 2024) and Tiger Tracks Gravel. In 2024 4Five+ established a Southwest Chapter to support regional women in their pursuit of an active lifestyle. We also support members to take up leadership roles, and have established a grant to support women undertaking further training to fulfil these roles.
